"Talk, Read, Sing" Campaign Aims To Help Close The "Word Gap"

According to researchers at Rice University, children from high income families will experience hearing 30 million more words by age four than children of low income families. That’s from parents or others just reading or talking to young children, just describing the world around them. Researchers say this so-called “word gap” has big implications for brain development, educational achievement and long-term success.

Now a national program from a group called Too Small To Fail is taking on this issue here in the valley called "Talking Is Teaching: Talk, Read Sing." The program is bringing together education leaders, law enforcement and the business community to help raise awareness of the issue.

Guests:

  • Linda Gleason of the The Children’s Movement a local coalition focused on raising the reading level of local children
  • Kendra Rogers – the Director of Community Investment for Granville Homes, formerly of First Five Fresno County
  • Darius Assemi – President of Granville Homes, who made the $100,000 gift in support of this campaign
Joe Moore is the President and General Manager of KVPR / Valley Public Radio. He has led the station through major programming changes, the launch of KVPR Classical and the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership the station was named California Non-Profit of the Year by Senator Melissa Hurtado (2019), and won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting (2022).
