Sarah Rector, avid composer and vocalist at home in many genres, will present the topic “Lillian Hardin: The Matriarch of Jazz.” Often only recognized as Louis Armstrong’s second wife, Lillian Hardin was, in fact, the female backbone at the center of jazz history. Lillian was a pianist, composer, arranger, and business woman. The Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings are known to be some of the most influential recordings in jazz history and the woman behind these recordings was Lillian Hardin. In this presentation and performance Sarah Rector will be bringing to light the significant contributions that Lillian Hardin made to jazz. Sarah will be joined by Ben Makino on keyboards.
