Young Artists Spotlight

Wednesdays at 3:00 PM

The San Joaquin Valley is home to some of the most talented young musicians you'll find anywhere. Young Artists Spotlight gives these musicians, ranging from junior high through college the opportunity to perform live on the radio, and share their passion for classical music with the FM89 audience. The live performances take place each Spring, direct from the new Barmann Chaney Studio. The programs can be heard Wednesdays at 3:00 PM in February, March and April.

2017 marks a number of firsts for the program and the station. To begin, we welcome a new host for the program, FM89’s David Aus. A musician and educator himself, David will bring audiences new insights into the talented students who get to perform on the show.

Second, 2017 marks the first year that Young Artists Spotlight will originate from the new Barmann-Chaney Performance Studio at Valley Public Radio’s new broadcast center in Clovis. The new facility was designed from the ground up to host live music performances like Young Artists Spotlight with optimum acoustics and technical capacity. In prior years, some student groups were too large to perform with their whole ensemble and were forced to leave some students at home because our old performance studio was too small.

Likewise, less than optimum sound isolation in our old facility meant that all work in the rest of the station had to stop when Young Artists Spotlight was in session. Sometimes employees were forced to work and record content inside their cars during this time. Now with a proper studio with state of the art acoustic technology, we are able to be more efficient and deliver great sound quality to listeners.

Also new this year will be the addition of Facebook Live video streaming of student performances. This added dimension will allow users of the popular social network to watch the performances live as they happen. We hope you will join us for another season of excellent performances from talented students on Young Artists Spotlight.
