The thousands of drivers that make their way up the Grapevine on Interstate 5 every day probably have little idea they’re passing through one of the most diverse ecological regions of the state.
This place, where the Coast Range meets the Transverse Range and the Tehachapi Mountains is home to the Wind Wolves Preserve. At 93,000 acres, it claims to be the largest nature preserve run by a non-profit organization on the west coast. Spanning a diverse mix of habitat from the San Joaquin Valley floor all the way to 6,000 foot tall mountains, the preserve is home to California condors, bears, Tule elk and dozens more species.
This Saturday, the Wildlands Conservancy will hold an event celebrating the organization’s education activities at the preserve, with musicians Dave Stamey and Erin Inglish. Director Dan York joined us on Valley Edition to talk about the event as well as the other things happening at Wind Wolves, from habitat restoration to hiking trails and more.
