On Valley Edition: Giant Sequoias & Drought; Heat Illness; Roy Ashburn; Fresno Growing Up

Valley Public Radio

This week on Valley Edition we learn why scientists fear some Giant Sequoias are at risk thanks to the drought. We also learn about plans for development in Fresno County in the area along Friant Road and the San Joaquin River, as well as new rules designed to save the lives of farm workers in California's hot summer months. In interviews this week, we talk to John Cox of the Bakersfield Californian about an effort by Kern County to make drilling a new oil well as easy as getting a building permit. Ben Adler talks with former state lawmaker Roy Ashburn, five years after he left office shortly after announcing he was gay following a drunk driving arrest. Ashburn talks about the GOP and gay rights issues. Tina Wyneken of the Shinzen Friendship Garden joins us to talk about the Toro Nagashi Festival taking place this weekend at Woodward Park, and journalist Steven Provost wraps up the show talking about his new book "Fresno Growing Up."

Joe Moore is the President and General Manager of KVPR / Valley Public Radio. He has led the station through major programming changes, the launch of KVPR Classical and the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership the station was named California Non-Profit of the Year by Senator Melissa Hurtado (2019), and won a National Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting (2022).
