Feds To Help Fresno Plan A Bike Share Program

With the popularity of bike-share programs growing across the nation, Fresno is one step closer to a system of its own.

In order to improve air quality and to provide another low-cost transportation option, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is helping Fresno State and the City of Fresno plan a bike-sharing system.

Fresno is one of 21 communities to receive the grant, which will help start a pilot program on the university campus. Thomas Gaffery Fresno State’s parking and transportation manager.

Gaffery: “I want to provide opportunities to make it convenient to use active transportation methods whether that’s walking, biking, taking the bus or a mixture of those methods to come to campus for free.”

Gaffery says the system will include the neighborhoods surrounding the 1,300 acre college and if successful, it may prove to be a model for other areas in Fresno.

The EPA will begin advising on the project this spring as part of the Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program.
