California Voters Head To The Polls

Today isn’t a presidential election, but Californians will elect a governor, seven other state office holders and three-quarters of the state Legislature.

Democrat Jerry Brown is asking voters to give him a record fourth term as governor. He’s facing Republican Neel Kashkari, who led the federal government’s bank bailout program under Presidents Bush and Obama.

Capitol Bureau Chief Ben Adler says there are several tight races for statewide office:

Adler: “Superintendent of Public Instruction pits two Democrats against each other, incumbent Tom Torlakson against challenger Marshall Tuck. And then a couple of other races – for Controller: Mayor Ashley Swearengin of Fresno, a Republican, against Board of Equalization member and Democrat Betty Yee. And Secretary of State: Democratic state Senator Alex Padilla is going up against Republican Pete Peterson.”

The GOP is also trying to pick up at least two Assembly seats or one Senate seat to block legislative Democrats from maintaining their two-thirds supermajority.

There are also six statewide measures on the ballot. They include Proposition 1, the $7.5 billion dollar water bond, and Prop 2, a state budget reserve constitutional amendment.
